Who are the Junior Giants?
- Junior Giants baseball is the flagship program of the Giants Community Fund, which is the nonprofit arm of the San Francisco Giants.
- The program provides a summer baseball league, run free of charge for children ages 5 – 18 living in inner cities and rural suburbs throughout central and northern California, Oregon, and Nevada.
- More than 14,800 youth participate in the Junior Giants program – nearly 4,000 of which are girls.
- Over 9,000 participants come from low income households.
- 39% of participants are Latino.
- 2/3 of Junior Giants leagues’ participants would not have played baseball had they not been offered this program.
- Over 1,800 community leaders act as volunteer coaches and mentors.

- The Giants Community Fund is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, founded in 1991.
- The Community Fund provides jerseys, hats, baseball equipment, and tickets to select Giants games.
- The San Francisco Giants provide training for Junior Giants coaches and host baseball clinics for Junior Giants players.
What is the mission of the Junior Giants?
- The Junior Giants baseball league is unique because emphasis is placed not on winning games, but on building character and self-esteem.
- The program is built around the “Four Bases of Character Development”: Confidence, Leadership, Teamwork, and Integrity.
- Coaches teach these values in hopes of helping the players to make smart decisions, and to keep them active and off the streets.
- Honors such as the Junior Giants Willie Mac Awards and Junior Giants Scholars are given annually to exceptional participants in an effort to emphasize the importance of education and community involvement.
- In addition, the Giants Community Fund strongly supports initiatives in the areas of Education, Health, and Violence Prevention.
- These initiatives provide the Junior Giants with opportunities to participate in a reading program, acquire healthy eating and exercise habits, and learn other ways to become an upstanding member of their communities.
What is the history of the Junior Giants league?
- Junior Giants baseball began in 1994 and has since grown to include over 1,065 teams in 78 leagues throughout more than 166 cities, ranging from Bakersfield, California to Medford, Oregon to Las Vegas, Nevada.
- In 2002, the Junior Giants program was inducted into the World Sports Humanitarian Hall of Fame as the “Best Single Program” in all of professional sports.
Who is in charge of coaching the Junior Giants teams?
- Junior Giants relies on community leaders and volunteers to act as coaches and mentors to the league participants.
- 26% of the coaches are female.
- Parents and guardians are strongly encouraged to coach a team to become more involved in their child’s extracurricular activities.
